Tenebrism
The style
A dramatically shadowed painting style built on an extreme, exaggerated contrast between deep, engulfing darkness and a single sharp pool of illumination, form emerging abruptly from near-total shadow rather than through gradual tonal transition, meticulous, controlled brushwork concentrated entirely within the illuminated passages while shadow remains deliberately unresolved, a theatrical, almost violent immediacy carried through the stark light-dark confrontation, and a haunting, intensely focused gravitas rooted in the most extreme tradition of chiaroscuro painting. Influenced by: Caravaggio, tenebrist painting tradition, Baroque chiaroscuro technique, dramatic single-source oil-painting method.
